Old Man’s Trip

Trudy’s gone missing. A friend of yours from your early 20s, you met her during your lost-party years. Always up for anything and a frequent drug taker, she was the life and soul of any party she gate-crashed. While the rest of you mellowed out and got on with life, she took herself around the world in search of new adventures. You were going to meet her on her triumphant return in a bar in Manchester five days ago. When you got there, all you received was a hastily scribbled note saying she had gone to take mushrooms up near Old Man’s Trip a local beauty spot in the Pennine village of Mingsborough.  That was five days ago. Her parents are worried the police have come up with nothing.

Time to get the crew together take it upon yourselves to find her.

More information

Liminal is Paul Mitchener’s (friend of Go Play Manchester) hit RPG of British Folklore and Supernatural goings-on. You take the role of a Liminal, a person who has one foot in the mundane world and another in the supernatural Hidden World. You might be a wizard of the High Council of Merlin, or a changeling with fae blood, a werewolf, or an investigative journalist who became aware of the Hidden World through chasing a story. The system is straight forward 2d6 vs target number game, with characters having special abilities tied to their concept. No knowledge of the setting or system needed.

Note: this replaces the previously advertised Ghosts of Alexandria that will run at a future Go Play Manchester.

Shrine of Wintertop

System: 13th Age Glorantha
GM: Guy Milner

Strange times have come to the settlements around Kero Fin, Ernalda’s sacred mountain. Bandits attacked you on the road wearing Orlanthi temple guard robes, and now the quiet settlement of Halfway reports that none of their pilgrims that set off up the mountain this past fortnight have returned. Can you ascend the sacred mountain and clear out the chaos infestation that has corrupted it?

13th Age Glorantha combines the spear-shattering tactical excitement of D&D with free-wheeling narrative improvisation of shared-GM storygames. Glorantha is an exciting mythic world with anthropomorphic ducks in it. No knowledge of either is required.

The Dread Fortress of Captain Penfold

GM: Josh Clark
System: Stars Without Numbers

The legendary Captain Penfold, Terror of Space, has returned to the sector with a vengeance but also with an enormous bounty of 2 million credits his head. With this being more than enough to set anyone up for a life of luxury to whoever can best him and his mobile dread fortress many take this challenge but none so have succeeded so far. Can your brave crew best this fearsome foe and claim that life of luxury?

More info: Stars Without Numbers is a science-fiction rpg based upon early D&D.

The Wages Ophir

System: Savage Worlds
GM: Chris Hart

A Pulp adventure in the Savage World of ‘The Day After Ragnarok’.

Across the world, lies the trillion-ton corpse of the Midgard Serpent, raised from the sea by the nazis and destroyed by Truman’s atomic fire: poisoning the Earth with every night that passes.

A small band of mercenaries under the command of the Royal Navy have been deployed to escort a volatile tanker of Ophiline from the Hereford Cut to a small coastal town in Wales. A local separatist politician, Solo Man, is rumoured to have a stock-pile of precious resources to trade, in exchange for the valuable fuel.

Keep Calm, Carry On Shooting nazis.

Winter Con 2020 a Big Thanks!

The idea was simple to run a day meet up, with games in the morning and afternoon, to celebrate Go Play Manchester’s 1st Anniversary.

Two months of constant publicity, on Twitter, Facebook, word of mouth through the shop at Fanboy 3, later and suddenly on Saturday 11th at 10 am when I walked through the door 40 odd people were already there eager to get on with the gaming. And after my brief introduction, they did, sorting themselves out with tables and getting down to the hard work of rolling dice and describing their characters actions.  I joined John Ossoway’s River of Heaven game and had a cracking time being a space marine in a slick sci-fi action thriller (read my review here).

Even due to last-minute dropouts we ran 13 games over the two slots

The Mermaids of Magda, The Guns of Olympus Mons, Only Fools Rush In, Fire, The Great Wain Robbery, Legions of Gold (Redux), Murky Waters, Breakout!,
Manta Prowl Tank Down., Hostile Negotiations., Captain Moonray and the League of Unspeakable Evil., GoblinQuest., The Rumble in the Bronx (Marvel Superheroes FASERIP).

Fanboy 3, as usual, were excellent hosts.  I cannot emphasise how much of Go Play’s success both at Winter Con and during the usual monthly meetups are down to Hedi and her staff. It’s a lovely, comfortable venue, where the game shop side of the business is neatly pushed to the side to allow a massive amount of organised play as well as pick up games in-store. The games side of it is well maintained and fantastic, with a wide range of boardgames and RPGs. My wallet is significantly lighter after browsing the excellent selection of RPGs during the con.

We took an hour for lunch which gave folk time to socialise as well as decamp to local eateries nearby in the Northern Quarter and Piccadilly Gardens. After the con was over a large group of us went to the Port Street Beer for a few post-con real ales 😊

Will we be doing it again this time next year? Hell yes! It’s inspired me to run another one day con later in the year (details to follow because it is still in discussion), as well as commit to more regular afternoon meetups which starting next month.

Note, there have been two changes in how we organise things that arose from the day.

  1. Saturday suits us so much better than Sunday, and more importantly Fan Boy 3, who run regular D&D events on Sunday. We were struggling for numbers and they were struggling to fit us in alongside the D&D. So while neither side is not ruling out Sunday Go Play’s in the future, in the main, we shall now be meeting on Saturday afternoons.
  2. To help with the increased attendance, and if I can’t make it on the day, Roderick, who some of you have had the pleasure of playing in his WFRP/W40K, is going to be my deputy.

Thanks to everyone who came along and played or ran a game at Winter Con and made it such a triumphant day.

Enjoy

;O) Newt

The Rumble in the Bronx

System: Marvel Superheroes (FASERIP)
GM; Kris Main

Wild animals, mutants beasts, and Dinosaurs (yes, dinosaurs) are reportedly terrorising citizens in The Bronx. Whilst the authorities are capable of dealing with a few wild animals, this requires more Heroic intervention before things get out of control.
Can the Superheroes of New York stop the rampaging beasts, discover how and why they appeared in The Bronx, and bring an end to this nightmare? Only time will tell…
